Apex Energy NL and its ASX Listed JV partner, Ormil Energy Ltd (OMX.AX) have been granted authority to drill a single exploration well within the Burragorang region south west of Sydney. The approval was granted by the NSW government with stringent environmental conditions following a detailed application process carried out by the JV. The planning process consisted of extensive consultation with relevant government agencies.
The JV now has authority to carry out exploration drilling in each of its three Petroleum Exploration Licence (PEL) areas, PEL454 in the Burragorang region and PEL’s 444 and 442 in the Illawarra region. The drilling at three initial sites will consist of core sampling of the Illawarra Coal Measures from the Bulli seam to the Woonona Seam. Further tests will be carried out to determine coal seam and other strata characteristics. Each site will then be rehabilitated by the complete filling to the surface of each hole with concrete, followed by surface environmental work.
The JV still awaits planning authority for an additional exploration site within PEL444 in the Northern Illawarra, however the JV can now commence operational activities and the initial campaign is expected to include a single core hole in each PEL. Apex currently has a 15 hole approved drilling program for the Illawarra region, granted in September 2009.
